ACCCA - Diversity Forum Introduction

Dear Colleagues:

ACCCA is, and always has been, an organization that continuously strives to improve its services and benefits to our members. In service to our membership, the ACCCA Diversity Forum is taking the lead on championing all aspects of diversity across the state. The ultimate goal is to not only value and advocate for diversity across the system, but to also promote greater understanding and tolerance in our educational institutions.

The ACCCA Diversity Forum invites every member to join them as they pursue the overall goal of enhancing diversity. This year’s priority for the Diversity Forum is the development of its own page as part of the ACCCA website. The Diversity Forum webpage will showcase ideas, issues, and innovations pertaining to diversity. If you are interested in helping kick-off this webpage, there are three paths you can follow:

  1. Submit an article (no more than 600 words) describing the state of diversity in the community college system from your perspective. Specifically, we would like for you to share how the issue of diversity has been a challenge for you, what are or were some of the diversity issues that you as an administrator face most often, and/or what you feel are the advantages of being an administrator in a diverse college environment. The more specific your examples, the better. These articles are targeted for use on the diversity website, but they may also prove appropriate for publication in the monthly newsletter.
  2. Submit the best examples of published or existing short articles focused on the full range of issues surrounding diversity in general as well as diversity in education. The idea is to have this growing library of articles available on the webpage in a rotational format, with new options popping up each time the page is refreshed. You can submit links to articles or articles attached as Word or PDF files.
  3. Submit ideas and leads for resources, such as keynote speakers, publications, innovative curriculum, programs, services, photos—everything and anything devoted to promoting and understanding diversity. This Diversity Resource Databank is devoted to ensuring the progress of diversity in an educational environment. If you are submitting an image, please submit as .jpeg or .gif.

If you are interested in participating in the development of the Diversity Forum webpage, please submit either an original article or a range of reference material you feel would be useful. Email your submissions to Diversity Forum Chair, Shalamon Duke at dukesa@lacitycollege.edu or call (323) 953-4000 ext. 2280 to have your questions answered directly. Submissions will always be accepted, but the Diversity Forum hopes to start using your submissions as early as December 2006.

Individually, we can make a difference. Together, we can change the world.
